Yaddo writer Jonathan Lethem will read from his award-winning novel Motherless Brooklyn at the Saratoga Springs Barnes & Noble store at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 13.

Winner of the 2000 National Book Critics Circle Award in the best fiction category, Motherless Brooklyn (Doubleday, 1999) tells the story of a detective whose Tourette's Syndrome turns his sentences into rhythmed barrages of free association as he tries to solve the murder of his boss and mentor.

Mr. Lethem's presentation, which will include a question-and-answer session and an opportunity to have him sign copies of his book, is part of a series of readings the store is hosting in honor of Yaddo. The reading series is designed to introduce the local community to artists who have held Yaddo residencies. The Saratoga Springs store also has a permanent rotating display featuring books, music, and movies by Yaddo artists.

Besides Motherless Brooklyn, Mr. Lethem is the author of the novels Girl in Landscape (Doubleday, 1998), As She Climbed Across the Table (Doubleday, 1999), Amnesia Moon (Harcourt Brace, 1995), and Gun, With Occasional Music (Harcourt Brace, 1994); and the story collection The Wall of the Sky, The Wall of the Eye (Harcourt Brace, 1996). His short stories have appeared in Esquire, The Paris Review, Crank, and Journal Wired, among others. His essays and reviews have been widely published, including in The New York Times Book Review, Salon, Bookforum, The New York Observer, and The Village Voice. Mr. Lethem has been in residence at Yaddo four times, first in 1997 and most recently this year.

The October 13 program is free and open to the public. The Saratoga Springs Barnes & Noble store is located at 3029 State Route 50. For information about the reading, call (518) 583-7717.
