Saratoga Springs, NY (April 8, 2008) - Yaddo author Philip Schultz has won a 2008 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry for his collection titled Failure, it was announced Monday at Columbia University in New York City. Mr. Schultz, a respected poet, fiction writer, and educator, has been teaching creative writing for nearly 30 years and founded The Writers Studio in 1987 after spending four years as the director of New York University's graduate creative writing program. Mr. Schultz has taught undergraduate and graduate fiction, poetry, and literature, and craft classes at Tufts University, Kalamazoo College, University of Massachusetts at Boston, Columbia University, and New York University. His published works include Living in the Past, The Holy Worm of Praise, the poetry chapbook My Guardian Angel Stein, Deep Within the Ravine (recipient of The Academy of American Poets' Lamont Prize), and Like Wings (winner of an American Academy & Institute of Arts and Letters Award as well as a National Book Award nomination). His work has been published in The New Yorker, Partisan Review, The New Republic, The Paris Review, and Slate, among other magazines. He also is the recipient of a 2005 Guggenheim Fellowship in Poetry as well as the Levinson Prize from Poetry magazine. Mr. Schultz, a four-time Yaddo guest artist, grew up in Rochester, New York, and now lives in East Hampton, New York. He has said he was a "terrible student" who suffered from dyslexia and didn't learn to read until he was in the fifth grade. Another Yaddo author, Lore Segal, was a 2008 Pulitzer finalist in fiction for her story collection Shakespeare’s Kitchen. The Pulitzer Prize in Poetry is awarded “for a distinguished volume of original verse by an American author.” This year, two poets were honored by the Pulitzer committee, with the other poetry prize going to Robert Hass for Time and Materials. The awards, which include a $10,000 cash prize, will be formally presented at a luncheon on May 29 at Columbia University. Yaddo artists have won a total of 63 Pulitzer Prizes.
