Yaddo writer Tom Piazza (www.tompiazza.com) is scheduled to appear on the television special “Katrina: The Long Road Back,” airing Monday, August 28, at 8 p.m. (Eastern Time) on NBC. Brian Williams will anchor the documentary report marking the one-year anniversary of the devastating hurricane that hit the Gulf Coast. Piazza’s heartfelt book about the need to fight for his adopted hometown, Why New Orleans Matters, recently received the 2006 Humanities Book of the Year Award from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities. He wrote the book-length essay in just under five weeks from temporary quarters in Missouri after Hurricane Katrina forced him out of his New Orleans home. Piazza, who spent much of the last year touring the country trying to generate national interest in New Orleans’s future, was at Yaddo recently working on a novel about two families – one black and one white – displaced by Hurricane Katrina. The new book is slated for publication in September, 2007. For our December 2005 news story about the publication of the book, click here.
