Tilson Thomas Champions New Works

- Yaddo composer, conductor, and pianist Michael Tilson Thomas has launched a new creative partnership with music publisher Boosey & Hawkes, the New World Symphony, and the San Francisco Symphony that will annually identify and offer emerging composers professional development experience.

The program, called New Voices, is aimed at reimagining the orchestral commissioning process. Each season, the three partners will guide an emerging composer from the Americas through the process of being commissioned, composing, and performing new works, providing resources and support from both the publishing and presenting sides. For example, the inaugural composer, Zosha Di Castri, a Canadian living in New York, has been commissioned to write two new works, one for a chamber ensemble and one for full orchestra. Both of her new pieces will be work shopped and premiered with the New World Symphony and then rehearsed and performed by the San Francisco Symphony. In New York, the composer will receive editorial guidance and business advice from Boosey & Hawkes representatives. The composer also will have significant access to the presenters’ artistic teams and the publisher in preparation for the premieres. Tilson Thomas, who is the founder and artistic director at the New World Symphony and music director for the San Francisco Symphony, will conduct both performances.

To select the composer chosen for the New Voices initiative, a preliminary panel of American composers and industry leaders identified composers and invited them to submit portfolios. The final selection was made by Tilson Thomas and a panel of three composers, including fellow Yaddodian Steven Stucky.
